Bereits die Übersetzung erfüllt die Rolle eines Kommentars, indem sie Worte, die Tschernichowsky in das Hebräische eingeführt hat (als Übersetzungen aus dem Ukrainischen und Russischen oder als Entlehnungen aus dem Aramäischen) ebenso aufschlüsselt wie Ausdrücke, die dem modernen hebräischen Leser nicht mehr geläufig sind. Eine weitere Aufgabe kann die Übersetzung nicht leisten: Weil eine Bibelstelle im Deutschen nicht den tradierten, festen Wortlaut des hebräischen Originals besitzt, ist der Klangraum, den der Tanach, Gebete aus dem Siddur und weitere klassische hebräische Texte bilden, in der Übersetzung nicht zu bewahren. Diese Rolle übernimmt der philologische Kommentar. Er dient dem Verstehen und leistet zugleich Grundlagenforschung zum komplexesten Werk der „hebräischen Renaissance“, da eine kommentierte Werkausgabe im Hebräischen noch aussteht.
