Von 1906 bis 1932 führten rund 40 Nationalstaaten das Frauenwahlrecht ein. Hedwig Richter und Kerstin Wolff erklären in diesem Sammelband, warum Frauen so lange aus dem Gleichheitsverständnis exkludiert werden konnten und warum sie nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg in vielen europäischen Ländern als politische Subjekte wahrgenommen wurden. Ihre These: Frauengeschichte ist im Kern Demokratiegeschichte, und diese muss transnational verstanden werden. In ihren Beiträgen betrachten die Autorinnen und Autoren unter anderem die Eroberung des politischen Raumes durch die Suffragetten, die politische Partizipation bei Louise Otto-Peters und die Partizipation von Frauen im Großherzogtum Hessen.
