Dieser Band versammelt zwölf Beiträge, die auf einer Tagung unter dem Titel „Manu propria. Vom eigenhändigen Schreiben der Mächtigen“ im September 2014 erstmals vorgetragen und diskutiert wurden. Thema sind Päpste, Kardinäle, Monarchen, Fürsten und Fürstinnen und deren eigenhändiges Schreiben, wobei als geographisch-politischer Referenzraum der Beiträge West-, Süd- und Mitteleuropa gewählt wurde. Den Epochenschwerpunkt und chronologischen Rahmen bildet das Spätmittelalter, das in vielen Bereichen der europäischen Schriftkultur einen Paradigmenwechsel markiert.
