Spiralfömig schraubt sich der Fries in die Höhe. Auf einer Gesamtlänge von 200 m zeigt er Szenen aus den Kriegen gegen die Daker in den Jahren 101/102 und 105/106 n. Chr. Napoleon III. war von der Trajanssäule in Rom so fasziniert, dass er 1861/62 Abgüsse der Reliefs anfertigen und aufnehmen ließ. Die 250 erhaltenen Fotoplatten wurden 2002 restauriert, und diesen Bildschatz zeigt der Band im großen Format auf Doppelseiten, Szene für Szene in Nahaufnahme. Im Erhaltungszustand des 19. Jahrhunderts ist dabei wesentlich mehr erkennbar als am Original in Rom, das unter der Luftverschmutzung sehr gelitten hat. Der renommierte Historiker und Archäologe Alexandre Simon Stefan kommentiert jedes Bild und bietet neue Interpretationen. Er entschlüsselt die Trajanssäule historisch, kunsthistorisch und rezeptionsästhetisch.
