Wolf von Niebelschütz étant un auteur du XXe siècle encore peu étudié par les germanistes, et, à défaut de traduction française, quasiment inconnu en France, ce travail de recherche a comme vocation de donner un aperçu des textes en prose de cet écrivain dont l'œuvre fut longtemps délaissé malgré l'accueil favorable que lui avait généralement réservé la critique littéraire allemande. En avançant la thèse que Niebelschütz fut avant tout un grand narrateur, une large partie de cette étude est consacrée à ses deux chef-d'œuvres Der blaue Kammerherr et Die Kinder der Finsternis. Une analyse approfondie des techniques narratives déployées dans les deux romans permet de rapprocher cet auteur, dont la pensée fut rigoureusement conservatrice, de la réflexion romanesque d'auteurs de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle et de l'écriture post-moderne. L'auteur ayant fait le choix de situer l'action de ses romans à des époques lointaines, l'époque médiévale et l'époque baroque notamment, l'étude vise à donner une définition de la conception niebelschützienne du "roman historique" qui, en fin de compte, n'a rien d'un roman historique traditionnel et qui relève parfois du genre utopique. L'analyse structurelle et thématique permet, par la suite, de dégager la pensée de l'auteur dont les idées maîtresses sont exposées plus en détail dans ses essais. L'étude des textes narratifs "mineurs" de l'auteur, de ses écrits inédits ainsi que des recherches biographiques tendent enfin à retracer l'évolution de l'œuvre et à comprendre pourquoi les autres textes en prose sont restés dans l'ombre

Wolf von Niebelschütz is a twentieth century author who up to now has been little studied by germanists, and the dearth of translations of his works means that he has remained unknown in France. The objective of this study, then, is to get insights into the prose texts of an author whose works have long been neglected, although they were generally favourably received by German literary critics. Expounding the thesis that Niebelschütz was above all a great narrator, much of this doctoral study is given over to an analysis of his two masterpieces Der blaue Kammerherr and Die Kinder der Finsternis. An in-depth study of the narrative techniques used in the two novels makes it possible to establish links between this author, whose thinking was strictly conservative, and the reflections of authors writing in the second half of the twentieth century who pondered the notion of the romanesque and the post-modern era. The author chose to situate his novels in the distant past, particularly in the medieval and baroque periods. Given such a context, the study aims to define the Niebelschützian conception of the "historical novel" which, all things considered, has none of the characteristics of the traditional historical novel but belongs rather to the utopian genre or to the tale. The thematic and structural analyses subsequently make it possible to gain access to the author's thinking, whilst the latter's key ideas are more fully developed in his essays. The study of the author's "lesser known" narrative texts and of his unpublished works, combined with biographical research work, all aim to trace the evolution of his work and to understand why the other prose texts have been neglected
