Im Kontext der Berufsausbildung leistet der Religionsunterricht einen wesentlichen Beitrag, religiöse Fragen kompetent zu bearbeiten und das gesellschaftliche Miteinander in seinem geschützten Raum zu reflektieren. Die drei Institute für berufsorientierte Religionspädagogik in Deutschland – KIBOR, EIBOR, bibor – widmen sich im Rahmen qualitativer Studien dem Thema der Konfessionalität des Religionsunterrichts an berufsbildenden Schulen. Jedes Institut führte Gespräche mit zahlreichen Expertinnen und Experten zur Frage, was die Konfessionalität des Religionsunterrichts an berufsbildenden Schulen ausmache, inwiefern das Modell des konfessionellen Religionsunterrichts noch zeitgemäß und wie es angesichts virulenter demografischer Entwicklungen um seine Zukunft bestellt sei. Auf Basis der Auswertungen ihrer Studien votieren die Institute übereinstimmend für das Modell des konfessionellen Religionsunterrichts, welchem sie mit der Leitkategorie der „Offenen Konfessionalität“, wenn nicht eine ganz neue, so doch zweifellos eine neu zu denkende didaktische Perspektive zuschreiben.
