This gave it, in contrast to barbarised vernaculars and even Greek, its staus as the fundament of all literary and scholarly tradition. The renewal of Latin as a sacral power, uniting humanity, is indicated, with decisive contemporary pathos, to be the responsibility of humanists as linguists and of their patrons. This volume depicts Valla’s justification of Latin’s superiority as a humanising educational force with reference to Quintilian’s ideal of rhetoric.
