Ebenezer Tweezer ist 511 Jahre alt. Gerne würde er auch noch älter werden. Dazu muss er das Biest, das unter seinem Dach wohnt, mit den ungewöhnlichsten Dingen füttern. Im Waisenhaus scheint er mit der kleinen Bethany fündig geworden zu sein, die er als Futter mit nach Hause nimmt. Da sie dem Biest aber zu dünn ist, muss Ebenezer drei Tage mit ihr verbringen. Dabei merkt er, dass er dummerweise so etwas wie Freundschaft zu der frechen Bethany entwickelt - jetzt muss ein neuer Plan her! - Das Buch ist der gelungene Auftakt einer herrlich skurrilen Gruselreihe! Bethany ist wirklich ein ekelhaftes Kind und doch fiebert man mit ihr mit! Die Figuren sind allesamt völlig überdreht beschrieben - vom Vogelhändler über die Waisenhausleiterin bis hin zu Ebenezer. Das ist bester englischer Humor, angereichert mit tollen Schwarz-Weiss-Illustrationen! An diesem Titel - er wird auch verfilmt - führt kein Weg vorbei!!! Ab 9
