Depuis les années 1970, une génération d'historiens libanais a impulsé un mouvement de réécriture de l'histoire ottomane de leur pays et de leur région, phénomène commun à l'ensemble des historiographies arabes moyen-orientales de la fin du XXe siècle mais qui se développe au Liban au cours d'une période marquée par l'exacerbation des oppositions ideologiques et par la guerre civile. Cette thèse a pour but d'étudier les conditions sociales et épistémologiques dans lesquelles un tel mouvement de révision a pris forme, et de restituer en contexte les pratiques historiographiques libanaises contemporaines. Elle met en lumière les évolutions affectant le mode même de production de l'histoire savante au Liban -son fondement institutionnel, son paradigme disciplinaire, son régime documentaire -, et en examine les effets, en combinaison avec divers facteurs d'ordre social et politique, dans la transformation des représentations historiennes du passé ottoman. Il apparaît dès lors, à travers différents débats historiographiques contemporains, qu'en dépit de la persistance de profondes divergences d'interprétation, un « tournant ottoman » a bien eu lieu

Since the 1970s, a generation of Lebanese historians has started to rewrite the Ottoman history of their country and their region. Such a phenomenon is common to ail Middle Eastern Arab historiographies of the late twentieth century, but in Lebanon it develops in a context marked by the exacerbation of ideological opposition and civil war. This thesis aims to study the epistemological and social conditions in which such a revision movement took shape, and to put contemporary Lebanese historiographical practices in their proper context. It highlights trends affecting the very mode of production of academic history in Lebanon -its institutional foundation, its disciplinary paradigm, its documentary regime -and examines their effects in combination with various social and political factors in the transformation of historians' representations of Ottoman past. It therefore appears, through several contemporary historiographical debates, that despite the persistence of profound differences in interpretation, an "Ottoman Turn" has occurred
