Objets utilitaires embellis par un riche décor, les mortiers de bronze fondus en France entre le XVIe et le XVIIIe siècle n'avaient jamais fait l'objet d'une étude appronfondie. Leur ornementation les ayant longtemps fait passer pour des pièces de la Renaissance, il a été nécessaire d'en découvrir les rares exemplaires signés et datés afin de préciser la localisation et la chronologie de leur production. Plus de deux mille objets catalogués, portant un millier de pastillages hérités des plaquettes métalliques circulant dans l'Europe entière, permettent de redécouvrir des ateliers oubliés, actifs en particulier à Paris, Rouen, au Puy-en-Velay et à Lyon au XVIIe siècle, et de mieux appréhender les conditions de fabrication et d'utilisation de ces oeuvres d'art méconnues

Bronze motards produced in France between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries are utilitarian objects often embellished with lavish decoration. However, despite their beauty, they have never been the focus of an in-depth study. In previous literature these motards have been commonly categorised as Renaissance artefacts due to the nature of thier ornamentation, hence his study has aimed to find signed and dated examples in order to identify centres of production and to etablish a secure chronology for thier production. Over two thousand mortards have been catalogued, and around one thousand ornamental designs inspired by Renaissance plaquettes have been identified and listed : this has enabled a rediscovery of forgotten workshops active in Paris, Rouen Le Puy-en-Velay and Lyon in the seventeeth century and allowed a better understanding of the conditions of production and the use of these unrecognized works of art
