Au début de la "Vie" qu'il consacre à Domenico Ghirlandaio, Vasari définit le peintre comme "l'un des plus grands et des plus illustres maîtres de son époque". Domenico appuyait sa production sur une hiérarchie rigoureuse, tout en cherchant à se spécialiser et diversifier son offre. L'étude du cadre socio-économique dans lequel s'insèrent ses commanditaires permet en outre de tracer les contours d'un "milieu ghirlandaiesque" particulièrement dynamique (I). Suite à la mort prématurée de son frère, c'est Davide qui reprit les rênes de l'atelier familial. Cette période de flottement n'empêcha pas toutefois de nombreux artistes - élèves et suiveurs - d'initier un dialogue avec l'art de Domenico (II). Ce n'est qu'au début du XVIe siècle, avec Ridolfo, que l'atelier renoua avec le succès. Le fils de Domenico satisfit fièrement ses ambitions socio-professionnelles nourries par son père. Comme ce dernier, il s'affirma comme un maître recherché et évailla une vive émulation auprès de ses contemporains (III)

At the beginning of the "Life" he devotes to Domenico Ghirlandaio, Vasari describes the painter as "one of the most important and most excellent masters of his age". Domenico organized his production according to a rigorous hierarchy and endeavoured to specialize and diversify his offer at the same time. Moreover, the study of the socio-economic context to which his patrons belonged allows us to delineate the outlines of a particularity dynamic "ghirlandaiesque milieu" (I). After the premature death of his brother, Davide took up the family workshop. However, this period of wavering did not prevent numerous artists - pupils and followers - from initiating a dialogue with the art of Domenico (II). Only in the early 16th century, with Ridolfo, did the workshop enjoyed renewed success. Domenico's son proudly fulfilled the socio-professional ambitions nurtured by this father. Just like the latter, he established himself as a master in demand and aroused a true craze among his contemporaries (III)
