Cette thèse étudie la genèse des caractères originaux de l'actuelle présence arménienne en Éthiopie. Elle montre le lien entre la mobilisation des représentations de l'étrangeté et la construction du national dans une société donnée. Sans verser dans une lecture culturaliste du social et du politique, elle explique l'utilisation particulière des immigrants arméniens par les souverains éthiopiens au xxe siècle comme l'instrumentalisation, pour des nécessités politiques contemporaines, de liens religieux exclusifs et de contacts séculaires à Jérusalem. L'étude de la mémoire offre un «sentier détourné» pour vérifier nos hypothèses et sert une comparaison avec d'autres expériences diasporiques et migratoires. Le contexte d'énonciation ou de divulgation des récits oraux et des photographies permet de lire la fabrique des héros et des mythes comme des évidences de la sédentarisation des immigrants et de leurs descendants en Éthiopie, par opposition avec une mémoire d'exilés. Le concept de configuration nous permet d'écarter une lecture identitaire ou réifiée des rapports sociaux. La notion d'espace de sociabilité met en lumière la capacité des individus à franchir les lignes et, dans des conditions sociologiques et juridiques qui les y autorisent, à se jouer à leur guise des identités et des appartenances

This thesis studies the genesis of the originalities of the Armenian presence in Ethiopia. It shows the links between the utilization of foreignness's figures or representations and national construction into a given society. Rejecting a cultural interpretation as to explain the peculiar utilization of Armenian immigrants by Ethiopian sovereigns, it underlines the role played by contemporary political needs into the importance given until the Twentieth Century to old Ethiopian-Armenian religious relations in Jerusalem. The study of memory opens a way to check such an hypothesis and to compare with other diasporas or immigrants elsewhere. Taking into consideration the social motivations in telling stories or communicating photographs and private documents helps to understand the making of heroes and myths as evidences of a sedentary logic shared among immigrants and their heirs in Ethiopia, in opposition to a memory of refugees or uprooted. Elias' s concept of configuration is useful to outreach identity as an explanation for social relations. The notion of an interstitial space of social relations enlightens the ability of individuals to cross the borderlines and, taking advantage of specific sociological and juridical environment, to play with identities
