La diffusion d'ornements et de matériaux en série pour le bâtiment, dès le début du XIXe siècle en France, est un phénomène de grande ampleur qui a été peu étudié. Ce travail tente de l'éclairer à travers le cas spécifique des terres cuites produites dans la région toulousaine. Il montre comment, en dépit de leur forme empruntée à un répertoire classique, les premiers éléments de série constituent des matériaux nouveaux dont les formes et les dimensions induisent des assemblages qui remettent en cause le savoir-faire des ouvriers mais également le travail de conception des architectes. L'attention particulière portée aux catalogues commerciaux, qui accompagnent l'apparition des éléments en série, révèle toute l'ambiguïté de leur statut. Sous des apparences simples et claires, ces publications contribuent à modifier les manières de concevoir et de construire les édifices. Contrairement à l'image couramment donnée par les historiens d'un milieu architectural réticent aux transformations industrielles, les personnes à l'origine de ces produits sont issues pour bonne part des milieux traditionnels du bâtiment. Parmi les innovateurs, les architectes occupent une place de choix, ce qui éclaire d'un jour nouveau la question du rôle des milieux artistiques et artisanaux dans l'innovation. L'étude s'appuie sur une analyse du contexte dans lequel apparaissent les éléments de série, notamment des traditions constructives liées à la brique et en particulier de la pratique de la taille des briques que les ornements en terre cuite visent à remplacer. Elle montre en quoi réside la nouveauté des éléments, (nature, fabrication, production), accordant une place importante à la réapparition du moulage de la terre cuite au XIXe siècle et au rôle joué dans ce domaine par les collections de terre cuite antique

The widespread use of mass-produced decoration and building materials as early as the beginning of the nineteenth-century is a phenomenon of considerable importance wihch as not yet been seriously researched. The present work attempts to shed light on the question by concentrating on the specific case of terracotta products in the region of Toulouse. We show how, despite their derivative classical style, the first mass-produced items are in fact a new form of building material which, in their form and size, create combinations which call into question both the skill of the construction workers and the conceptual imagination of the architects.The carefull attention paid here to the commercial catalogues which accompanied the appearance of mass-produced elements has revealed a curious ambiguity in their status. The simple and straightforward appearance of these publications belies the substantial change that they brought to the way in which buildings were designed and constructed. Contrary to the image, usually conveyed by historians, of an architectural milieu hostile to industrial innovation, the individuals responsible for these new products came mostly from a traditional background. Architects are seen to occupy pride of place among the innovators of the time, a finding which sheds new light on the question of the extend of the creative contribution of both artists and artisans. Our study is base upon a carefull analysis of the context in which this mass-produced elements appeared, in particular the building traditions connected with brickwork, especially the way bricks were cut, a practice which the introduction of decoration threatened to render obsolete. We identify the areas of innovation - the nature, construction and comercial production of the articles - and emphasize the importance of the reappearance in the nineteenth-century of the practice of moulding baked clay and of the part played in this domain by public and private collections of antique terracotta objects
