La thèse est avant tout une biographie critique d'Andrzej Towiański (1799-1878). Le caractère chronologique est donc présent, mais l'accent est placé sur le développement proprement dit du towianisme, durant l'exil du penseur. Cet exil est subdivisé en trois périodes distinctes sont le pivot est la collaboration avec Mickiewicz. Il y a un avant, un pendant et un après. Cette subdivision est nécessaire et permet, premièrement, de comprendre la cohésion de la pensée de Towiański et d'apercevoir à quel point la contingence événementielle est importante dans la cristallisation des réponses qu'il tentait d'apporter aux questions éthiques et morales qu'il soulevait. Cela met en évidence que ces questions étaient uniquement celles qui se posaient à lui ou à ses proches. Deuxièmement, on identifie de la sorte les points communs entre sa pensée et celle de Mickiewicz (et l'influence, antérieure à leur rencontre, du poète sur le penseur), mais que Towiański limite son intérêt à des situations données, tirées du qotidien, tandis que Mickiewicz tente d'inscrire sa réflexion dans un réseau antérieures dont il se revendique. Un dernier élément est à souligner : lorsque le poète ne collabore plus avec le penseur, celui-ci tombe dans un anonymat flagrant. Le temps présent est une composante intrinsèque du towianisme, qui devient une manière de se comporter durant le moment d'attente de l'inéluctable, un moyen éthique d'être au monde. Les biographies des disciples sont établies, et les contextes religieux (laïcat, ordre des Résurrectionnistes, etc.) et historiques sont précisés pour chaque pays et époque évoqués

The thesis is, first and foremost, a critical biography of Andrzej Towiański (1799-1878). Chronology thus plays its part, but the work focuses on the development proper of Towianism, during the thinker's period of exile. This exile is subdivided into three distinct periods, with Towiański 's collaboration with Mickiewicz serving as a pivot. There is a before, a during and an after to the story. Subdividing the periods is necessary and allows the reader, first of all, to understand the cohesion of Towiański's way of thinking and remark upon the extent to which factual contingency is important when it comes to the essence of the answers which Towiański was trying to find to the moral and ethical questions he was asking himself. This highlights the fact that these questions were exclusively the ones which he or those close to him were grappling with. Second, one can identify in this way the common ground between his way of thinking and that of Mickiewicz (and the influence, prior to their meeting, of the poet on the thinker), though Towiański restricted his interest to everyday situations, whilst Mickiewicz attempted to find a place for his ideas within the network of ideas which had gone before and which he upheld. One final element must be stressed : once the poet stopped working with the thinker, the latter fell into total obscurity. The present is an intrinsic element of Towianism, which becomes a manner in which to behave during the period spent waiting for the inevitable, an ethical way to be in the world. The disciples' biographies are established and the religious and historical contexts are clearly outlined for every country and period mentioned
