Um 1770 hat der Iserlohner Oberbürgermeister Johann Caspar Lecke eine bemerkenswerte Chronik seiner Heimatstadt niedergeschrieben. Aus dem gelernten Kaufmann Lecke war inzwischen ein preußischer Beamter geworden, aber seine Herkunft konnte er nicht verleugnen. In seiner als "Versuch" bezeichneten Chronik hat er Nachrichten über Iserlohns Geschichte und Gegenwart zusammengestellt, die seinen Stolz auf die unternehmerischen Leistungen der örtlichen Bevölkerung, also vor allem seiner Kaufleute, dokumentieren. Die Darstellung ist damit nicht nur für die Stadtgeschichte Iserlohns von Bedeutung, sie ist darüber hinaus ein bemerkenswertes Selbstzeugnis aus der Frühgeschichte des Bürgertums. Chroniken dieser Art sind in ganz Deutschland die große Ausnahme. In den Band mit aufgenommen wurden die familiengeschichtlichen Schriften und Testamente Leckes.
