Content: Being one of the constituent features of Mesoamerica as a cultural area, originating deep in the pre-Hispanic past, the indigenous calendars have received constant attention in the anthropological literature concerning this region. The northwestern part of the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes is home to the Chuj and various other peoples belonging to the Q’anjob’alan branch of the Maya language family. The present article shows the various forms in which the calendar of the Chuj and other neighbouring Maya groups continues to survive. As is shown, it may take on forms quite distinct from its original function as a time counting device.
