Les sermons d’Adémar de Chabannes (989-1034), Ms. Berlin, Phillipps 1664 (f. 68-170), donnés dans leur 1ère édition critique, sont un témoin des bouleversements du XIe siècle, permettant d’évoquer les difficultés de la « Paix de Dieu » en Aquitaine. Ils sont aussi le témoignage d’un homme attaché à une église irréprochable, précurseur de la réforme « grégorienne » à venir. Autographes, ils ont permis l’étude vivante d’un homme pris dans son acte de composition. Un support d’une telle transparence laisse percevoir dans ses avancées et ses remords l’œuvre d’une figure controversée, difficile à saisir. L’aspect le plus célèbre de son activité reste son implication dans la défense de l’apostolicité de saint Martial, mêlant enjeux personnels, prestige abbatial, conséquences financières. Adémar s’est ainsi lancé dans l’élaboration frénétique d’un corpus d’autorités : les Sermones in concilio sont une recomposition de la compilation du « Pseudo-Isidore ». La lecture de ce volume a fait apparaître, outre l’obsession d’Adémar pour l’apostolicité de saint Martial, certains sujets d’étude : pax et caritas, science et signification des nombres, rapport du copiste à l’auctoritas et à la source, positions respectives de l’auteur et de l’auditoire, défense de l’Église, légende sur Mahomet. Ces sermons, destinés à la lecture personnelle et à l’instruction, n’ont pas été prêchés : trop longs, faisant plutôt figure de collection, ce ne sont même pas toujours des « sermons ». Une 1ère utilisation des méthodes statistiques d’analyse lexicale en a montré l’intérêt pour préciser les caractères de l’écriture et le cadre de pensée d’Adémar, et en faire apparaître les structures sociales

The sermons of Ademar of Chabannes (989-1034), Ms Berlin, Phillipps 1664 (f. 68-170), which are given in their first critical publication, bear witness to the eleventh century upheavals, and allow one to evoke the hardships of the Peace of God in Aquitaine. They are also a testimony of a man who set great store by a church beyond reproach, precursor of the « gregorian » reform to come. As autographs, they enable one to study a man who is in the act of composing. Such a transparent material, through its advances and its « remorse », gives us an insight into the work of a controversial person who is hard to grasp. The most famous side of his activity is his involvement in the defence of the apostolicity of Saint Martial, blending personal interests, abbatial prestige and financial consequences. Thus, Ademar set about developing frantically a corpus of authorities : the Sermones in concilio are a recomposition of « Pseudo-Isidorus ». Some subjects for studying have emerged, besides the obsession of Ademar for the apostolicity of saint Martial : pax and caritas, science and the meaning of numbers, the relationship of the copist with the auctoritas and the origin, the respective positions of the author and the audience, the defence of the Church, the legend on Mahomet. These sermons, which were meant for a personal reading and edification/instruction were not preached : they were too long and looked rather like a collection, they cannot be always called « sermons ». The first use of the statistical methods concerning the lexical analysis shows its relevance to specify the characters of the writing and the framework of Ademar's thought, and makes the social structures stand out
