Web Feet summary: The illegitimate son of a wealthy Florentine merchant, Giovanni Boccaccio was born in 1313. Along with Dante Alighieri, author of The Divine Comedy, Boccaccio wrote mostly in contemporary Italian, helping to establish the language as the standard in Italy's literature, replacing Latin. This site, a project of Brown University's Department of Italian Studies, examines the life of Boccaccio and his contribution to Renaissance literature. The full text of his Decameron is available here in English and Italian
