Le Tour du Monde. Nouveau Journal des Voyages, première revue de géographie illustrée en Europe naît, en 1860, de la volonté de Louis Hachette (1800-1864) de répondre à l'engouement des lecteurs pour l'actualité des voyages et pour les récits venus des voyageurs et des voyageuses eux-mêmes, Français ou étrangers. Hachette en donne la direction à Édouard Charton (1807-1890), initiateur de la presse illustrée en France (Le Magasin Pittoresque en 1833 puis L 'Illustration en 1843). Pour le républicain, ancien saint-simonien et membre de la Société de géographie qu'est Charton, Le Tour du Monde doit être une revue de vulgarisation des connaissances géographiques acquises ou vérifiées par le voyage, dans laquelle l'image joue un rôle essentiel, à la fois preuve du voyage et moyen d'instruction. De là vient l'appel aux plus célèbres dessinateurs du temps, notamment Édouard Riou, Émile Bayard ou Gustave Doré. Les partenaires étrangers de Hachette - de New York à Saint-Pétersbourg et de Stockholm à Madrid - achètent ou vendent les textes et/ou illustrations des récits de voyage. Ils alimentent ainsi la revue et assurent la diffusion de son contenu. Mine documentaire pour les écrivains (Jules Verne) et les artistes (Gustave Moreau), Le Tour du Monde nourrit l'imaginaire des contemporains de 1860 à 1914. L'approche matérielle permet de montrer comment se fabriquent des récits imprimés, depuis les notes et dessins ou photographies du voyageur jusqu'au texte illustré proposé au lecteur. L'approche culturelle entend étudier la manière dont la revue contribue à la construction de la culture de l'exploration et participe de la culture de la colonisation

Le Tour du Monde. Nouveau Journal des Voyages, the first illustrated geography magazine in Europe, was born, in Ise to fulfill Louis Hachette's will to respond to the readers'enthusiasm for reading travel news and accounts given by travellers themselves, be they French or foreigners. Hachette (1800-1864) gave the editorship of the newborn magazine to Édouard Charton (1807-1890), the initiator of the illustrated press in France (Le Magasin Pittoresque in 1833, then L'Illustration in 1843). For such a man as Charton, a former Saint-Simonian Republican member of the Geographical Society, Le Tour du Monde was to be a magazine that would popularize the geographical knowledge which had been acquired or verified by travelling ; a vital role was to be played by illustrations, as they are both an evidence of the travel and a means of education. Hence the calling in of the most famous illustrators of their rime : Édouard Riou, Émile Bayard or Gustave Doré. Hachette's foreign partners (from New York to Saint-Petersbourg and from Stockholm to Madrid) bought or sold texts or illustrations of travel stories. Thus they supplied the magazine with material and ensured die diffusion of its contents. As it became a plentiful source of documents for writers (Jules Verne) and artists (Gustave Moreau), Le Tour du Monde fed the geographical imagination of its contemporaries from 1860 to 1914.A material approach makes it possible to show how printed stories are manufactured, going from the travellers'notes, drawings and photographs to the illustrated texts offered to the readers. A cultural approach intends to explore the way in which the magazine contributed to the building up of a culture of exploration and partook of a culture of colonization
