L'objet de cette thèse est d'analyser les logiques sociohistoriques au principe de la construction de l'identité des espaces intercommunaux qui se définissent en marge des circonscriptions politiques "traditionnelles" (commune ou département). Les entretiens menés, l'observation d'événements spécifiques et l'étude des journaux communaux et intercommunaux soulignent combien l'institution intercommunale et son territoire, véritable "fiction" politique, se nourrissent de discours, de services à la population et d'une symbolique émergente. Visant à consolider l'attractivité du territoire, l'élaboration d'une identité intercommunale apparaît aussi au centre de luttes entre élus communalistes et intercommunalistes qui cherchent à maîtriser sa définition. Au final, l'identité d'une agglomération relève de la production par un groupe d'acteurs reconnus comme techniquement compétents, d'un ensemble de représentations assez consensuel pour faciliter l'intégration des protagonistes au processus intercommunal

The subject of this thesis is the analysis of the socio-historical principles of agglomerations identity, which rise beside traditional political territories like municipality or department. Interviews, events examination, communal and intercommunal press study show how intercommunal institution and its territory are a political "fiction", feeding itself on speechees, services to inhabitants and emerging symbols. In a competition environment, local politicians want to reinforce the intercommunal territories attraction, and in the same time, to take control of the caracteristics of this identity in order to preserve or dispute the municipal integrity. Finally, agglomerations identity depends on actors considered as technically competent, who make a set of images able to guide the intercommunal process and to hide conflicts, which underlie it
