Series Statement: The I Tatti Renaissance library 94
Content: "Giovanni Gioviano Pontano (1429-1503) was the leading humanist of Quattrocento Naples, the head of the Neapolitan Academy, and a brilliant humanist Latin poet. He wrote Latin poetry in a range of genres, including didactic, lyric, pastoral, and elegy. He also wrote prose treatises and philosophical dialogues. This volume contains the text and translation of his Eclogues (Eclogae) and Garden of the Hesperides (De hortis Hesperidum), two poetic works written in dactylic hexameters in imitation of ancient pastoral and didactic poetry, respectively, and in particular, of Vergil's Eclogues and Georgics. The Eclogues consist of six poems of varying length on diverse topics set in different places, but predominantly in the Neapolitan countryside. The Garden of the Hesperides is a horticultural didactic poem on gardening and the cultivation of citrus trees"--
