Bei aller Kritik des gesellschaftlichen Erscheinungsbildes war Grosz (1893-1959) von den großen Städten fasziniert, dafür stand bis 1933 Berlin, danach New York. Das ist die eigentliche Entdeckung in diesem voluminösen Begleitband der 1995er Ausstellungen in Berlin und Düsseldorf, daß das als idyllisch eingestufte, weil weniger bekannte Amerikabild des G. Grosz sehr rasch seine Risse bekam und apokalyptische Ausdrucksformen annahm. Die zahlreichen Einzelaufsätze des Bandes untersuchen Lebens- und Werkabschnitte des Malers (auch mit Beispielen seiner pornographischen Aquarelle, hier als "erotisch" bezeichnet), Zeitströmungen, die Kunst seiner Zeitgenossen usw. Verschwenderisch illustriert. Erstmals werden die Skizzenbücher zugänglich, die seit 1994 in den Besitz der Akademie der Künste gelangten. Kleinere Bibliotheken werden sich weiterhin mit preisgünstigen Monographien behelfen müssen (u.a. G. Grosz: BA 8/93), ansonsten ist diese Werkschau unumgänglich. (3) (Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann)
