Generously supported by Madame Aline Foriel-Destezet After Thierry Escaich’s first opera Claude, the Opéra national de Lyon showcases a new operatic composition by the French organist and composer, entitled Shirine. The libretto, written by the Franco-Afghan author Atiq Rahimi and adapted from the epic poem Khosrow and Shirine by 12th-century Persian poet Nezami Gandjavi, narrates the impossible love story between the Persian king, Khosrow and Shirine, a Christian princess from Armenia. In this Persian fairytale with resolutely feminist undertones, rising opera stars Jeanne Gérard and Julien Behr bring flair and personality to the main roles. The opera’s orchestra and the promising cast of young talents are conducted by maestro Franck Ollu, with a contemporary staging by Richard Brunel. Photo © Jean-Louis Fernandez
