Klebsiella pneumoniae ha sido identificada como uno de los principales microorganismos en infecciones asociadas en la atención en salud en Colombia; sin embargo, el aumento de la resistencia en este microorganismo ha venido en aumento en los últimos 10 años. Esta resistencia ha sido asociada a la presencia de enzimas tipo beta-lactamasas, especialmente, las de tipo carbapenemasas. La carbapenemasa más prevalente en este microorganismo es sin duda alguna la carbapenemasa tipo KPC por sus siglas en inglés, Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase. El éxito de su diseminación ha sido asociado a la presencia de clones denominados de alto riesgo y durante el 2009 se observó en Colombia la presencia varios clones entre ellos los ST258 y ST512; razón por la cual el objetivo de este estudio fue identificar la presencia de clones de alto riesgo, sus características genéticas asociadas a la presencia de genes bla y su diseminación en cepas de K. pneumoniae portadoras de KPC en hospitales de Colombia. Para ello, se realizó un estudio observacional, utilizando 124 aislados MDR (uno por paciente) del banco de cepas del Grupo de Estudio de la Resistencia Nosocomial en Colombia de CIDEIM
