Los beta-lactámicos son el grupo de antibióticos que más se utilizan desde los años veinte cuando apareció la benzilpenicilina. Sin embargo, rápidamente aparecieron enzimas que eran capaces de hidrolizar estos antibióticos, lo que llevó al desarrollo de nuevos beta-lactámicos que eran más estables a estas penicilinasas. Posterior al uso de las cefalosporinas de tercera generación aparecieron las Beta-lactamasas de Espectro Extendido (BLEEs) que eran capaces de hidrolizar las cefa-losporinas hasta de tercera generación y el aztreonam. Esto impulso el desarrollo de los inhibidores de beta-lactamasas, agentes estables contra las BLEEs y que se combinaron a un betalactámico tradicional. Fue así como aparecieron las combinaciones de ampicilina-sulbactam, amoxacilina-ácido clavulánico y piperacilina-tazobactam. Seguido al incremento en el uso de estos ultimos, empezaron a aparecer aislamientos de Escherichia coli y Klebsiella pneumoniae resistentes a estas combinaciones
