The prolific career of figurative painter and sculptor Ismael Vargas (b. Guadalajara, Mexico 1947) is honored in 2008 with the publication of the present book and 2 exhibitions opened in Guadalajara, Jalisco: a retrospective titled "Pasión intacta" in the Museo de Arte de Zapopan (Museum of Art of Zapopan) and a collective exhibition in Galería Vórtice. This fine edition examines in detail 40 years of artistic career throughout the critical texts of Tomás González Sada, Carlos Monsiváis, Xavier Moyssén, Edward J. Sullivan and other expert collaborators. The autodidact painter, characteristic for his colorful artwork inspired in Mexican folkart, remembers his first paintings "While I listen to the radio, I would cut out the covers of "La Central" matchboxes, which had reproductions of the great painting masters, extending them over my bed, and accommodating them in a capricious order to later copy them. The required effort produced in me the sweet fatigue of having been a bullfighter, singer, lover and now I wanted to be a painter"
