“Sorolla, el gran pintor valenciano, el que representa acaso el otro polo de la escuela española, tiene el encargo de Mr. Huntington de hacer otro retrato mío para el museo hispánico […], y estoy ansiando por ver cómo me deja cuando en el otoño vuelva acá a hacerlo”. Este anhelo que Unamuno manifestaba en 1912 se vio finalmente truncado, pues Sorolla nunca llegó a terminar el mencionado cuadro. Pero, a pesar de ello, en su boceto logró captar a la perfección la esencia del retratado. De la misma forma entendemos la validez estética y documental de los materiales que se presentan en esta antología, compuesta por ciento treinta y ocho composiciones entre las que figuran tanto los poemas “sueltos”, publicados en prensa por Unamuno y no incluidos en ningún volumen poético, como otros que quedaron inconclusos e “inéditos” en su archivo, olvidados entre sus manuscritos. El análisis de las variantes de autor reflejado en esta edición crítico-genética revela, sin duda, importantes aspectos del taller del poeta y de su concepción poética que, hasta el momento, habían pasado desapercibidos por la crítica.
