Berlin war zwischen 1945 und 1990 der symbolische Ort einer in zwei Blöcke geteilten Welt. Nicht jede Verbindung wurde aber unterbrochen. Manche Kommunikationsformen blieben über den Eisernen Vorhang hinweg – jedenfalls rudimentär – erhalten. Christliche Gemeinschaften hatten den Anspruch, ihre kirchliche Einheit über staatliche Grenzen aufrechtzuerhalten und zu verteidigen. Mit Blick auf die Stadt Berlin wird deutlich, wie religiöse Vergesellschaftung unter den Bedingungen der Trennung funktionierte und in welcher Weise kirchliche Akteure in der Lage waren, die Mauer zu überwinden. Dabei lassen sich christliche Gemeinschaften in Ost und West nicht einfach bloß als „Selbige“ oder „Andere“ fassen: Ausgehend von gegenseitiger Beobachtung und geteilter Kommunikation werden grenzübergreifende Verflechtungen sichtbar, die neben Unterschieden und Gemeinsamkeiten, Konkurrenzmomente und Abgrenzungsbedürfnisse und damit den Wandel von Einstellungen und Werten als Wechselwirkungen beschreiben.
