Im Zentrum des Buches stehen die politischen Konversionen des jüdischen Juristen und hochrangigen Mitarbeiter des SED-Parteiapparats Leo Zuckermann (1908-1985), der sich in einer kurzen Zeitspanne zwischen Zweitem Weltkrieg und Beginn des Ost-West-Konflikts für die Rechte der Juden als Kollektiv einsetzte. So befürwortete er sowohl die Gründung eines jüdischen Staates in Palästina als auch die Restitution oder Entschädigung von den Nazis geraubten jüdischen Vermögens. Anstoß für diese beispiellose und weithin vergessene Haltung innerhalb der Arbeiterbewegung hatte ihm die Diskussion der Nachrichten von der Vernichtung der europäischen Juden im mexikanischen Exil gegeben, in der herkömmliche marxistische Gewissheiten vorübergehend durchlässig und für die Integration eines jüdischen Selbstverständnisses empfänglich wurden. Ausgehend von Leo Zuckermanns politischer Biografie leistet die Studie eine Erklärung dafür, weshalb dem Holocaust in der politischen Erinnerung der kommunistischen Bewegung kaum Bedeutung zukam.
