New works of art by Artist in Residence Céline Condorelli expose our surroundings in ways mostly invisible to the naked eye.00?Pentimenti? (Italian for ?regrets?) are the early stages of a picture which, when revealed by scans, show evidence of an artist?s corrections. Condorelli invites to us to become aware of our own way of seeing, to pay attention to the space and materials of the National Gallery, how we behave in it and how it is connected to the world outside.00Her installation transforms the room: a richly coloured print drapes and filters daylight entering through the skylight. A large rug replaces the museum?s benches and a soundscape by Hannah Catherine Jones, of voices and music of Trafalgar Square fills the room through the newly designed air vents on the floor.00Based on research conducted since the beginning of the one-year residency, she came to understand museums as ?machines for seeing? that teach us how to perceive and value art. The printed textiles contain technical images of all the materials in this room ? such as marble, wood and wall fabric ? made with the National Gallery?s Scientific Department using methods usually applied to paintings.00Exhibition: National Gallery, London, UK (13.09.2023 - 07.01.2024)
Inhalt:
"Céline Condorelli's practice addresses the boundaries between public and private, art and function, labour and leisure, in order to reimagine what culture can be and the role of artists within it. As the National Gallery's 2023 Artist in Residence, she was invited to respond to its collection and that of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, Exeter. Condorelli interrogates the role of museums as 'machines for looking' which guide audiences in how they perceive and value art. Using sculpture, architecture and installation, her art makes interventions in the ways people navigate space and highlights the act of exhibiting itself. This book presents a new body of work which focuses on the act of seeing, as well as pages created by Condorelli that document her research into the materials, spaces and history of the National Gallery. These are complemented by an essay by curator Priyesh Mistry and an interview with the artist by Lara Goodband."
