S. Poljakoff (1900-1969), französischer Maler russischer Abstammung, zählt zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der abstrakten Malerei. Seine Kunst entstand einerseits unter dem Einfluß russischer und byzantinischer Ikonenmalerei, andererseits als Resultat enger Kontakte zu einzelnen Vertretern der Klassischen Moderne wie Kandinsky und das Künstlerpaar Delaunay. Er wird als genialer Kolorist gefeiert, der in seinen Bildern einzelne Aspekte der Farbfeldmalerei und des Kubismus auf einzigartige Art und Weise vereinte. Die Monographie entstand begleitend zu der Retrospektive des Malers und enthält 4 Beiträge, eine ausführliche Biographie und Bibliographie. Farbige Abbildungen im kleineren Format müssen nicht unbedingt als editatorische Schwäche angesehen werden: Poljakoff war Meister der mittleren Bilderformate. Als 1.
