zur Ausg. 1998: Rezension (ekz): Burke betrachtet die Renaissance als kulturelle, ganz Europa umfassende Bewegung, die weder von heroischen Genies noch durch die Gesellschaft insgesamt, sondern durch kleine Gruppen vorangetrieben wurde. Sie begann mit Petrarca und endete mit Descartes. Im Gegensatz zu Burckhardt trennt Burke diese Epoche scharf von der Moderne. Erfreulicherweise verzichtet er ganz auf die meist übliche triumphalische Darstellung westlicher Errungenschaften. Stattdessen präsentiert er diese Zeit aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln, wobei er auch die Randgebiete Europas mitberücksichtigt. Der handliche, schön gestaltete Band mit ansehnlichen Abbildungen (schwarzweiss) aus der Reihe "Europa bauen" besticht durch eine klare Sprache und brillante Ausführungen. Mit Anhang. (2)
