Am 25. Oktober 1898 ging Kaiser Wilhelm II. mit seinem Gefolge in Haifa an Land, um am 31. Oktober, dem Reformationstag, die deutsche evangelische Erlöserkirche in Jerusalem einzuweihen. Die Palästinareise des Kaisers sollte zu einem der eindrucksvollsten Ereignisse während der 400jährigen türkischen Herrschaft im Heiligen Land werden. Hundert Jahre nach der damals höchst umstrittenen Reise wird der Versuch unternommen, anhand zahlreicher Bild- und Textdokumente zwischen Legende und Wirklichkeit zu unterscheiden und die Palästinareise Wilhelms II. in den Gesamtkontext deutscher Präsenz im Heiligen Land einzuordnen. Der Beitrag der protestantischen und katholischen Kirche sowie der württembergischen Templer zum Wiederaufbau Palästinas wird ebenso beschrieben wie die deutsche Palästina-Politik im 19. Jahrhundert.
