Die Studie über Imagebildung und Wirkungsgeschichte Hitlers des in Sheffield lehrenden, seit 20 Jahren mit Arbeiten zum Nationalsozialismus, zuletzt dem 1. Band einer Hitler-Biografie (BA 1/99) als renommierter Experte der Materie ausgewiesenen britischen Historikers ist die überarbeitete deutsche Übersetzung der 1987 vorgelegten englischen Fassung, ihrerseits die völlige Überarbeitung und Ergänzung einer 1980 in der Schriftenreihe der VhfZ in deutscher Sprache publizierten Vorstudie. Sie handelt nicht direkt von Hitler, sondern vom Kult um den Führer und von dem Bild, das sich normale Deutsche von Hitler machten, von Volksmeinung und Propaganda. Die Vorstudie basierte im Rahmen des IfZ-Projektes über NS in Bayern wesentlich auf bayerischem Archivmaterial. Hier ist weiteres Material hinzugekommen, dazu ein Kapitel über Hitler-Bild und "Judenfrage" sowie ein neues Schlusskapitel. Eine scharfsinnige Analyse, trotz mancher neuer Erkenntnisse keineswegs überholt. (2) (Friedrich Andrae)
