Auf seinem Landsitz Sierhagen bei Neustadt/Ostholstein hatte der Blumenliebhaber Johann Georg von Dernath Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts einen Garten angelegt, in dem er kostbare und exotische Pflanzen züchtete. Ganz im Sinne seiner Zeit wollte er deren vergängliche Pracht im Bilde festhalten und beauftragte 1720 den Maler Johann Gottfried Simula, die Blüten- und Zierpflanzen zu porträtieren. So entstand eine "Flora exotica" von fast 600 Abbildungen, heute aufbewahrt im National History Museum in London. Der vorliegende Prachtband enthält 83 Abbildungen, davon 61 auf Farbtafeln, mit historisch/landeskundlicher Einordnung und Beschreibung. Es sind wunderschön anzusehende Aquarelle von Narzissen, Lilien, Tulpen, Primeln, Nelken, Zitrusgewächsen und afrikanischen Raritäten vor exotischer Kulisse, von den Herausgebern auf eine Stufe mit dem Gottorfer botanischen Kodex von H. S. Holtzbecker gestellt. Teuer, aber sehr empfohlen! (I. Hanewald)
