Rezension: Bisher galt für das Weimarer Judentum das Bild von "Juden ohne Judentum", die keine eigenständige Kultur zu schaffen vermochten, sondern lediglich zur deutschen Kultur beitrugen, bis sie sich 1933 auf ihr Judentum besannen. Der seit 1997 in München jüdische Geschichte und Kultur lehrende Autor ("Nach dem Holocaust", BA 2/96; Mitherausgeber von "Deutsch-jüdische Geschichte in der Neuzeit", BA 3/97) zeigt, dass sich das Weimarer Judentum viel stärker mit dem jüdischen Erbe auseinander setzte, als bislang bekannt war: Er skizziert zunächst die Wurzeln jüdischer Erneuerung vor 1918, die ideologische und institutionelle Transformation jüdischen Lebens. Dann behandelt er die Wiederaneignung jüdischen Wissens in Lehrhaus-Bewegung und Wissenschaft des Judentums und schließlich das Ringen um Authentizität in Literatur, moderner Musik, bildender Kunst und Sprachen. Gelehrt, aber gut lesbar, vorzüglich übersetzt, beeindruckender Entwurf, aus dem viel Neues zu erfahren ist. (2) (Friedrich Andrae)
