Die Abwanderung insbesondere junger Familien mit Kindern aus den Kernstädten zu bremsen und sozial gemischte Belegungsstrukturen zu erhalten, sind heute die zentralen Problem- und Handlungsfelder einer Wohnungspolitik der Städte. Die Antwort auf die Frage, wie wir in Zukunft angesichts des dramatischen Rückgangs an Wohnungen mit Sozialbindungen kommunale Belegungsrechte sichern, ohne den Erhalt sozial gemischter Strukturen zu gefährden, ist für die Städte und ihre Entwicklungschancen von herausragender Bedeutung. Zum Thema "Integrative Wohnungspolitik gegen soziale Erosion in den Kernstädten" führte der Städtetag Nordrhein-Westfalen und das Deutsche Institut für Urbanistik eine Veranstaltung durch. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung wurde anhand der Diskussion zweier Fallbeispiele aus Düsseldorf und Dortmund mit den örtlichen Akteuren deutlich, dass Vermieter, Mieter, Träger der sozialen Arbeit und Städte vor Ort kooperieren müssen und dabei keine isolierten, sondern integrierte, partnerschaftliche Lösungswege eingeschlagen werden sollten. Die in der Veröffentlichung enthaltenen Veranstaltungsbeiträge haben hierfür eine Reihe guter Beispiele aufgezeigt.
