Porträtiert werden der FDJ-Funktionär Frank D., die Eisbärdompteuse Ursula Böttcher, der Schmalfilmamateur Erich S., die Schriftstellerin Brigitte Reimann und der Baggerfahrer und Rockpoet Gerhard Gundermann. Sie alle verbindet, dass sie mit ihren gesellschaftspolitischen Idealen und individuellen Träumen über die eng gesetzten Grenzen des real existierenden Sozialismus hinaus lebten.
