1849 hatte sich Richard Wagner ins Exil nach Zürich begeben, wo wenige Jahre später die Liebesromanze mit Mathilde Wesendonck begann. Aus dieser aufwühlenden Liebe entstand "Tristan und Isolde", wofür ihr der Komponist "aus tiefster Seele in alle Ewigkeit" dankte. Durch Wagners Vertonung ihrer "Fünf Gedichte für eine Frauenstimme", der Wesendonck-Lieder, wurde Mathilde unsterblich. In einem Brief bekannte Wagner: "Sie ist meine erste und einzige Liebe! Das fühl' ich nun immer bestimmter, es war der Höhepunkt meines Lebens." Sie hat - entgegeen dem Wunsche Richard Wagners - seine Briefe an sie nicht vernichtet - sie werden in diesem Buch veröffentlicht, zusammen mit den Briefen von und an Johannes Brahms.
