Dieses Buch erscheint konkurrenzlos, beeindruckend, schonungslos und verdienstvoll. Jörg Friedrich lässt sein Buch "Der Brand" (BA 2/03) nunmehr von einem Bildband begleiten, der mit der bekannten Präzision und Lakonie die Dimensionen des Bombenkriegs bildlich belegt: Angriff, Abwehr, Zuflucht, Bergung, Versorgung, Trümmerleben, Partei - lauten die Kapitel. Das einleitende Kapitel "Früher" und das Schlusskapitel "Heute" kontrastieren an einzelnen, nicht systematisch aufgereihten Beispielen, wie der Bombenkrieg in die Gestalt der deutschen Städte eingegriffen hat. Die Darstellung ist gleichsam montiert aus dem Bildmaterial und den dazugehörigen Bildunterschriften und wird begleitet von knappen, zeitgenössischen Texten. Bild und Text sollen "auf gleicher Höhe" stehen". Das Beeindruckende und Verdienstvolle ist, dass die Fotos dieses Buches nicht die ewig gleichen, vielfach abgedruckten und zu Stereotypen geronnenen Abbildungen der großen Bilderdienste sind, sondern dass Friedrich vor allem die Bildsammlungen der Stadtarchive erschlossen hat (und auch nicht vor drastischem Bildmaterial zurückschreckt).
