Der Report in arabischer, deutscher und englischer Sprache bietet eine kritische Analyse und Bestandsaufnahme der westlich-muslimischen Beziehungen. Auf Einladung des Instituts für Auslandsbeziehungen haben sechs Autorinnen und Autoren aus Ägypten, den Palästinensischen Autonomiegebieten, Malaysia, Bosnien und Herzegowina, Syrien und Pakistan die historischen Wurzeln der Konfrontation zwischen dem Westen und der islamischen Welt beleuchtet, Stereotypen und Vorurteile benannt und Ursachen und Folgen der Anschläge vom 11. September und der Kriege in Afghanistan und im Irak untersucht. Die Beiträge formulieren Empfehlungen und Ansatzpunkte für eine gemeinsame Gestaltung der Zukunft. Sie fordern u.a. mehr Möglichkeiten für Forschung und Kooperation, Sonderprogramme für gemeinsame Forschungsvorhaben, gemeinsame Durchsicht und Auswertung von Schul- und Lehrbüchern, verstärktes interkulturelles Training, Verbesserung der Medienberichterstattung, Austausch im Medienbereich sowie interkulturelle Initiativen auf dem Gebiet des Dokumentarfilms. Der Report geht zurück auf eine Auftaktveranstaltung des ifa-Forums "Dialog und Verständigung", die im Oktober 2002 auf Schloss Neuhardenberg mit Wissenschaftlern, Schriftstellern, Journalisten und Vertretern von Nichtregierungsorganisationen aus der islamischen Welt und Deutschland stattfand.
