Die Johannespassion zählt neben der doppelchörigen Matthäuspassion, dem Weihnachtsoratorium, dem Magnificat und der h-Moll-Messe zu den großen Vokalwerken der Leipziger Jahre Johann Sebastian Bachs. Im Gegensatz zu den übrigen oratorischen Werken hat Bach dieser Komposition jedoch nie eine endgültige Gestalt verliehen, sondern bei jeder Aufführung konzeptionelle Änderungen wie auch Eingriffe im Detail vorgenommen. Sämtliche bisherigen Ausgaben vermischen die Lesarten der verschiedenen Quellenschichten und präsentieren eine Werkgestalt, die zu Bachs Lebzeiten niemals klanglich realisiert worden ist. Der von der Praxis immer wieder geäußerte Wunsch, eine der authentischen Bachschen Fassungen zu musizieren, konnte mithin nicht ohne weiteres verwirklicht werden. Die vorliegende quellenkritische Neuausgabe kommt diesem Wunsch nun endlich nach und macht zum ersten Mal auch den vollständigen Notentext der zweiten unter Bachs Leitung erklungenen Fassung (1725) zugänglich, die aufgrund mehrerer ausgetauschter Sätze, darunter auch der Eingangschor, am stärksten von der heute geläufigen "Standardfassung" abweicht.
