In Russland wird der Warschauer Pakt bis heute als das Spiegelbild der NATO angesehen. Aus westlicher Sicht waren beide zwar Militärbündnisse, aber in ihrer Ausrichtung, Strukturierung und Zielsetzung sehr verschieden. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht als erste Gesamtdarstellung nach 1991 die Entwicklung des Warschauer Paktes von seinen Anfängen bis zum Zerfall primär aus der Perspektive Moskaus und des sowjetischen Generalstabs. Sie analysiert dabei einerseits die politischen Entwicklungen, auch im Bereich der Innenpolitik (insbesondere der Zivil-Militär-Beziehungen in der UdSSR), andererseits die militärischen Strukturen sowie die militärstrategischen Kriegsfallplanungen der UdSSR. Dabei steht die Frage, warum und wie es zum Zerfall des 〉roten Bündnisses〈 kommen konnte, im Mittelpunkt
