Trotz seiner geographischen Geschlossenheit und der dominierenden Stellung der Grafschaft Oettingen war das Ries - nicht zuletzt durch die herrschaftliche Aufspaltung in Teilgrafschaften und die Einbindung ehemals adeliger und geistlicher Besitzungen - in seiner historischen Entwicklung eine heterogene Landschaft. Die Bemühungen der Grafen (und Fürsten) von Oettingen um ein rechtliches Ordnungssystem "vor Ort" spiegeln sich in der Vielfalt der hier edierten ländlichen Rechtsquellen wider. Die im Zeitraum vom 14. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert entstandenen Texte geben einen detaillierten Einblick in die dörfliche Lebenswelt seit dem ausgehenden Mittelalter. Zugleich sind sie Ausdruck des zunehmenden Einflusses auf die Dorfgemeinde und des Bemühens um die Straffung und Zentralisierung der Herrschaftsorganisation im Dorf - der niedrigsten, aber wichtigen administrativen Ebene
