Das Buch der US-Historikerin wurde in allen Feuilletons des Herbstes gewürdigt. Ihr geht es um den gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit der Sexualität in Deutschland, insbesondere um ihre Brüche und Kontinuität zwischen 1933 und 1968. Herzogs Hypothese: Der Völkermord an den Juden lieferte den Anlass, die Bundesrepublik in den 50er-Jahren sexuell in Richtung "Anständigkeit" neu auszurichten. Von den 68ern - so Herzog - wurde dieser Schuldverdrängungs-Mechanismus durch die "sexuelle Revolution" demaskiert, mit der Begründung, der Holocaust sei eine Folge sexueller Unterdrückung im 3. Reich gewesen und die Sexualmoral der 50er-Jahre sei eine Fortführung der angeblichen NS-Rigidität. Aus dem strengen Wunsch der Linken, "nur gut zu sein", sei allerdings kein 3. Weg entstanden; der Gesellschaft heute attestiert Herzog eine "Onanisierung der Sexualität", in der sich das Bild vom unpolitischen Zeitgenossen widerspiegele. Inwieweit das viele Faktoren umfassende Geflecht der Gesellschaftsgeschichte durch die hier auf die Sexualitätsgeschichte verengte Perspektive "trägt", ist eine andere Frage.
