Die Quedlinburger Ärztin und Pfarrersfrau Dorothea Christiane Erxleben durfte als erste Frau in Deutschland 1754 an der medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Halle promovieren und als erste akademische Ärztin in ihrer Heimatstadt praktizieren. Der Band nimmt die erste medizinische Promotion einer Frau an einer deutschen Universität zum Anlass, interdisziplinär über Frauenbildung und die Möglichkeiten weiblicher Gelehrsamkeit seit dem 18. Jahrhundert zu reflektieren. Gleichzeitig wird das facettenreiche Leben, Arbeiten und Wirken der ärztlichen und akademischen Pionierin Dorothea Christiane Erxlebens neuartig verortet. Über die Untersuchung des konkurrierenden männlichen Ärztestandes seit dem 18. Jahrhundert gelingt es schließlich, den Bogen bis zur anerkannten Ausübung des Arztberufes durch Frauen bis heute und besonders in den neuen Bundesländern zu spannen. Eine umfängliche Bilddokumentation zur Person, zu Förderern und Lehrern, zum Wirkungsbereich und den wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen Dorothea Christiane Erxlebens ist dem Band angefügt.
