Der Schriftsteller Erich Kästner blieb 1933 in Deutschland, obwohl seine Bücher verbrannt wurden und er nicht mehr unter eigenem Namen veröffentlichen konnte. Als Zeitzeuge füllte er heimlich ein blaues Buch mit stenografischen Aufzeichnungen. Er berichtet vom Wahnwitz des Alltags im Krieg, vom Schicksal und Verhalten der großen und kleinen Täter und Opfer, von Bombennächten, Gerüchten und Flüsterwitzen. "Bis Ende November 1943 stand das blaue Buch, aufs sichtbarste verborgen, zwischen viertausend anderen Büchern im Regal. Dann steckte ich es, da die Luftangriffe auf Berlin bedenklicher wurden, zu dem Reservewaschbeutel, der Taschenlampe, dem Bankbuch und anderen Utensilien in die Aktenmappe, die ich kaum noch aus den Händen ließ." (Notabene 45). Seinen geplanten Roman über das Dritte Reich, für den er im blauen Buch Stoff sammelte, hat Kästner nicht vollendet. Notizen aus dem Nachlass geben erstmals eine Vorstellung von diesem groß angelegten Projekt.
