Die von Oberstleutnant Johann Heinrich Daniel Gerlach verfertigte großmaßstäbliche topographische Karte ist die bedeutendste Leistung innerhalb der exakten Kartographie des 18. Jahrhunderts im Lande Braunschweig. Sie umfaßt das gesamte Herrschaftsgebiet der Herzöge von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel: Vom Weserdistrikt um Holzminden im Westen bis zum Gebiet um Helmstedt bzw. dem Amt Calvörde im Osten; von Gifhorn im Norden bis hin zum Harz im Süden, wobei das Stift Walkenried, der Kommunionharz und das Fürstentum Blankenburg mit eingeschlossen sind.(Quelle: Text Verlagsmappe).
