"Streng", "geheimnisvoll" und "puristisch" sind die Attribute, mit denen die Bilder des 1916 verstorbenen dänischen Künstlers Vilhelm Hammershoi beschrieben werden. Die gedämpfte, pudrig wirkende Farbigkeit seiner Gemälde, welche überwiegend Interieurs darstellen, und der Einsatz des Lichtes weisen eine Nähe zur niederländischen Stubenmalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts auf. Im Begleitband zu einer Ausstellung in London sind viele seiner dem Symbolismus zuzuordnenden, stimmungsvollen Bilder ganzseitig zu sehen und kommentiert. Biografie und künstlerischer Werdegang des sehr zurückgezogen lebenden Malers sowie äußere Einflüsse auf sein Schaffen sind verständlich dargestellt und erschließen dem Leser einen Zugang zum OEuvre dieses äußerst ungewöhnlichen Künstlers.
