Die Geschichte der Niederlande im 20. Jahrhundert erzählte Geert Mak in "Das Jahrhundert meines Vaters" (BA 1/04), die Geschichte Europas im letzten Jahrhundert in seinem Buch "In Europa" (BA 1/06). In der Reihe "Deutschland und seine Nachbarn" (zuletzt I. Camartin, BA 12/08) erzählt der bekannte Publizist die gesamte Geschichte seiner Heimat. Gewohnt lesenswert und mit privaten Einsprengseln wird die wechselhafte niederländische Geschichte von den Batavern kurz vor Christi Geburt bis zur aktuellen Gegenwart erzählt. Der Autor schreibt über Wasser und Städte, Handel und Landwirtschaft, Glaubenseifer und Sozialdisziplin, die Treue zur Königin und Probleme der Migration. Es entsteht ein lebendiges und kritisches Porträt der niederländischen Gesellschaft. Wenige Schwarz-Weiß-Fotos und Karten, eine Literaturliste und eine Zeittafel runden die kleine, aber informative Geschichte des westlichen Nachbarlandes ab. Vor M.
